VERDICT

If you listen to popular music genres and want a fast and powerful sound, we would definitely recommend the Ultrasone PRO 900 because they exceed virtually all other closed-back headphones in this price range in nearly every way. Yes, to spend around $500 is a lot, but we can guarantee you that you won’t be tempted to upgrade anytime soon once you experience the sound of the Ultrasone PRO 900 first-hand and feel their brain-shaking sub-bass.

The Ultrasone PRO 900 are reference headphones for the professional sector and avid music listeners who refuse to compromise when it comes to the quality of their audio equipment. Featuring the cutting-edge S-Logic Plus technology from Ultrasone, these headphones promise unlimited precision in sound reproduction, and we know that Ultrasone is one of only a handful of headphone manufacturers in the world that can deliver on this promise.

Design and Build

The Ultrasone PRO 900 feel extremely solid right out of the box. They are made from hard plastic that feel like it can take some serious abuse. The same can be said about the hinges, which are smooth and precise.

If you’re a DJ and you like your headphones to be reasonably lightweight and comfortable, you’ll love the Ultrasone PRO 900. Compared to many other closed-back headphones, the Ultrasone PRO 900 don’t weigh nearly as much as we first expected just from looking at the product pictures. The amply padded earcups are just as comfortable as those on the HD650 from Sennheiser, but their size makes them more suitable for people with smaller ears.

The Ultrasone PRO 900 comes with two removable cables—one straight and one coiled—and both cables live inside the handy hard-shell case the headphones ship in. You can also find many excellent third-party cables for the headphones online or in your local audio store.

Sound Quality

According to the manufacturer’s specifications, the frequency response of the Ultrasone PRO 900 is between 6 Hz and 42,000Hz, and you better believe that they really go that low. The bass on these headphones is something else. It extends incredibly low, is very tight, detailed, and impactful, and music genres like EDM just make you want to dance.

The midrange is slightly recessed as a direct consequence of the V-shaped sound signature, especially before the first few hours of burn-in. After that, the sound signature slightly levels out, but the headphones never become truly neutral. But just because they have a colored soundstage doesn’t mean they don’t belong in the audiophile-grade category. The incredible detail and precise imaging that’s so characteristic for audiophile-grade headphones is here in abundance.

What’s in the Box?

The Ultrasone PRO 900 headphones come with extra earpads with great isolation, a detachable USC (ultra-soft) cable, and Neutrik connectors. All the accessories, as well as the headphones, are safely stored inside a hard-shell case with a handy mesh pocket for adapters or even a compact audio player.
