VERDICT

Many audiophiles would say that Skullcandy is a lifestyle brand first and audio equipment manufacturer second. While there might be some truth behind this statement, it doesn’t mean that they cannot produce a fantastic pair of headphones. Skullcandy Hesh 2 provide an excellent value for your money and sound quality that can rival much more expensive headphones from renowned manufacturers.

Skullcandy Hesh 2 over-ear headphones are built upon the success of their predecessor and feature a very recognizable design with an astronomically large number of colors that customers can choose from. They come with a promise of delivering a premium music experience for a low price.

Design and build

Simplicity and sleek design are two most prominent characteristics of Hesh 2. They feature oversized cans that hide a pair of powerful drivers. The large ear cups also host a very comfortable soft leather ear cushions that proved to be perfect for long listening sessions and did very good even in hot weather. Honestly, we expected to sweat a lot, but quickly found out that’s not the case with these headphones. It’s probably because the large size gives a plenty of room for air to flow around ears.

Skullcandy Hesh 2 come with a detachable cable, which is fantastic decision given that these headphones are going to be used a lot by skateboarders and bikers. In case something bad happens, the cable can just detach and save the headphones from what could otherwise be a fatal damage. It’s also worth mentioning that the cable has a single button in-line remote with a microphone. It does what you would expect it to do without any performance or quality issues.

The last thing we have to mention is the ridiculously large number of different color options that customers can choose from. You have traditional colors like black, red, blue, green, varied color combinations, and lastly a constantly changing array of different prints and custom designs. These come and go and some can thus become very rare and unique.

Sound quality

Skullcandy Hesh 2 sound surprisingly balanced and refined. We were expecting an overly bassy sound, but it turned out not to be the case with these headphones. The articulation is very good in all frequencies and they give a good sense of space and instrument separation.

Probably the only real negative is the slight recess in mid frequencies. This is noticeable with both male and female vocals. The issue can be mitigated with a careful use of equalizer. What doesn’t need any compensation is the bass. Lower and super-low frequencies have a good weight behind them and give music a lovely energetic feel.

What is in the box?

When you purchase Skullcandy Hesh 2, all you get are the headphones themselves and the detachable cable. That’s perfectly fine given their low price. A carrying case would be nice, but you can always get one on eBay for just a few dollars.
